The Third Eye, or Brow, Chakra is important because it is where we begin to disconnect from the 3rd dimension physical realm, and start opening the door to spirit and other dimensions. It is about an increased state of awareness the comes from beyond your five senses. Seeing in the Third Eye Chakra goes beyond seeing with your physical eyes, it is seeing with your etheric eye into inner realms. With this expanded sight you can see beyond illusion, words, and duality. Though all the chakras work towards this, it is in the Third Eye Chakra where you begin to step away from duality - separation between "I" and the rest of the world. Because there is a shift in how you perceive yourself, there is also a shift in how you perceive others. You gain the ability to look beyond a situation or experience to see the deeper explanation and motivation. You have access to an inner guidance and wisdom that transcends the third dimension. You can develop the ability to be an observer of life, rather than a judge and jury.
The Third Eye Chakra is where you know and experience your connection to your inner self and inner realms. You are free to seek truth in places beyond the physical realm, and beyond the five senses. You can then use your senses to validate your higher information. In our current society, you are told to not believe anything someone tells you. You are also told that if you can't see it, feel it, smell it, taste it and hear it, you probable shouldn't believe it. Even then, you are told to not even trust your senses. You definitely shouldn't trust anything someone tells you...UNLESS it's advertising, government, church, school, etc. Could it be that "they" just don't want us to trust each other - or ourselves? This is where your belief systems are important. It goes all the way back to the first chakra, the Root Chakra. If you are blindly accepting and believing something - without really knowing what it is and why you believe it, it is time to do some rearranging and releasing. If you hang on to a belief just to fit in, or so you don't upset your family, or any other rationalizing reason, it keeps you from opening up to truths and other possibilities. Your ego can get a lot of perks out of rigid beliefs that are simply self-serving.
There are differing opinions as to which gland the Third Eye Chakra is associated with. Many sources say it is associated with the pineal gland, while many others say it is associated with the pituitary gland. I have researched and contemplated this, and I believe it is associated with the pituitary gland. The pineal gland appears to be more closely associated with the crown chakra.

The pituitary gland is located behind the nose in a small cavity in the skull. It lies below the brain, in the middle of the head. It is very small (the size of a pea) and connected the the hypothalamus via the pituitary stalk. This stalk contains nerves and blood vessels. There are two sections to the pituitary gland, the anterior and the posterior. The anterior region receives hormones that are produced in the hypothalamus through blood vessels that run through the pituitary stalk. These hormones trigger the production of more hormones in the anterior pituitary gland. These hormones include thyroid stimulating hormone,

adrenocorticotropic hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, prolactin, and human growth hormone. The posterior region receives only oxytocin and antidiuretic hormone. All these hormones, under the direction of the pituitary/hypothalamus connection, supervise the production of breast milk, metabolism, growth, blood pressure, sexual maturation, reproduction, and more. They work to keep the systems of the body in balance. The pituitary gland/hypothalamus team also supervise the involuntary nervous system. This system is responsible for the amount of energy, heat, and water in the body. It determines your body temperature, heartbeat, and the amount of urine generated. Because the pituitary gland has so many responsibilities, it is called the Master Gland.
The pituitary gland has also been called the "Seat of the Mind". In this reference, the anterior region of the gland is said to control emotional thoughts. These are the thoughts that manifest creatively in forms such as music, art, and writing. The posterior region of the gland is said to control the more concrete and logical thoughts. From a spiritual perspective, the association of the Third Eye Chakra and the pituitary gland take these two forms of thought to a higher level. You can, in the sixth chakra, open to divine inspiration and understanding. You can see into these higher realms when the Third Eye Chakra is opened.
Opening your Third Eye involves more than the Third Eye Chakra and the pituitary gland. Both the pineal gland and pituitary gland are located in the third ventricle of the brain. The third ventricle is in the middle of the brain, in the middle of the cerebral hemispheres. It is part of a group of ventricles in the brain that form the central canal of the spinal cord. It's job is to protect the brain from injury, transport nutrients to the central nervous system, transport waste away from the central nervous system, and serve as part of the pathway for the cerebral spinal fluid. It's actually located between the higher centers of cognition, emotion and integration. It, in relationship with the Third Eye Chakra, creates a gateway to deeper and higher ways of knowing yourself, your reality, and the world around you. The third ventricle is where the energies from the pituitary (Third Eye Chakra) and pineal gland (Crown Chakra) come together to activate the Third Eye. You will learn more about the pineal gland in association with the Crown Chakra. All this information will come together there.
